Great man of the sea passes on Well known Redcliffs identity Warren Pasley, 86, passed away on Saturday. He had a life-long love of the water. Sarla Donovan reports WARREN PASLEY had hands like paddles, and the feet to match. His friends remember his swimming stroke as beautiful, effortless but incredibly quick. Friend of 67 years, Tony Johnson lived across the road from the Pasley family, which shifted from Invercargill when Warren’s father Eric bought the Redcliffs Four Square Grocery Shop in 1950. The site on Main Rd is now where the New World supermarket is. Warren and his two brothers Tom and John were prominent swimmers and the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club “snapped the Pasley boys up,” said Mr Johnson, who was a member at the club and is now patron. But the brothers had to bag a certain amount of sugar, flour and other dry goods at the shop each day before they were allowed out to the beach. Mr Johnson said the shop was one of the first to parcel up goods for self-service, instead of customers having them weighed

Bay Harbour News asked members of the Banks Peninsula and Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community boards what were the key issues in their areas. Heathcote ward city councillor Sara Templeton said finishing the Coastal Pathway was a top priority. A $10 million funding shortfall remains for the Sara Templeton Moncks Bay to Shag Rock section. “This is the most difficult and dangerous section,” said Cr Templeton. “It currently has no city council footpath. There was one prior to the earthquakes, but the rockfall and land movement remediation removed it. The city council needs to provide both safe pedestrian access along here and to complete the cycleway to Sumner.” •Turn to page 3

A FITTING tribute on page 1 today for Warren Pasley. Warren was very well known in the area and as Sarla Donovan’s article suggests, sea water probably flowed through his veins. His hands and feet were the size of paddles apparently. No wonder he could propel himself swiftly through the water, whether it be in the pool or sea. As well as winning medals in various carnivals and competitions, Warren also did his bit for the community. He was an active patrol member with the Sumner surf club, was part of Community Watch and was a Sumner-FerrymeadRedcliffs Men’s Probus Club member. Redcliffs identity had life-long •From page 1 After shifting to Christchurch and joining the Sumner SLSC, he went on to serve on various club committees and became club captain and instructor between 1954 and 1956. He competed in six-man, four-man, surf ski rescue, canoe, paddleboard, surf race and beltman events at Canterbury and national

championship level until the early 1960s. He was a Canterbury belt (senior) championship holder for four consecutive seasons in the early 1950s. In 1954 Warren toured Australia as a member of the New Zealand Surf Life Saving team, winning a senior surf race in the NZ v Australia test at Bondi and was first in a surf ski

race against Queensland. In 1956, Warren made one of the first fibreglass paddleboards in the country. He was an active patrol member with the Sumner SLSC until he shifted to Oamaru in 1964 to be superintendent and swimming instructor at the Oamaru swimming pool.

love of the water On his return to Christchurch, Warren worked as a teacher for one year at Van Asch School followed by a year at Kingslea Residential School. His wife Dianne said this experience prompted a change to social work, and he went on to work for the Children and Young Person’s Service.

A keen angler who loved fly fishing, there weren’t many lakes or rivers in the South Island that he hadn’t fished. In later years Warren used to drive the City to Sumner Community Watch car and was a member of SumnerFerrymead-Redcliffs Men’s Probus Club.

Impact of taking estuary shellfish Little is known about who is harvesting shellfish from the Avon-Heathcote Estuary and what impact, if any, this is having on the sustainability of the beds and bird feeding grounds. Environment Canterbury councillor and AvonHeathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust member Cynthia Roberts is hoping new research will shed light on what’s happening. Sarla Donovan reports ANYONE WHO regularly drives along the McCormacks Bay causeway can’t help but notice them. Groups of people dotted over the sand at low tide, with their trousers and skirts hitched up and buckets nearby. They are collecting shellfish from the sandbed and there seems to be an increasing number doing it. But how safe is the practice? And how sustainable is it? That’s what a research project aims to find out. Canterbury University third year biological science student Stephanie Hampson has been brought on board this summer to try and shed some light on an area in which there are “gaps in our knowledge,” admits Cynthia Roberts. Both the university and the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust have contributed to the costs of the summer research project, which will be supervised by Associate Professor Islay Marsden, an aquatic ecophysiologist from the School of Biological Science. Prof Marsden has been a member of the trust for 10 years and is currently its chairwoman. The trust manages the ecological welfare of the estuary and is working to update its management plan, said Dr Roberts. “As part of that, we realised

there are gaps in our knowledge, and one of those was shellfish and harvesting. We’re particularly interested because you regularly see people harvesting at the end of the causeway in spite of signs saying it’s not healthy – it is still quite contaminated after the earthquakes and after high rainfall.” The level of contamination varies, with the signs only put up when there are concerns, but Dr Roberts said people continue even then. “Signs were up pretty well continuously during the heavy winter rains. The estuary is a receiver for all the contaminants coming down from rooftops, roads, pathways. Stormwater carries high contaminants, such as dog faeces and so on, and this is the receiving basin of all the stormwater off quite a large catchment.” One of the aims of the plan is for people to be able to resume shellfish harvesting, she said: “But we want to make sure if they are – they’re not poisoning themselves.” Miss Hampson said she was looking forward to the project.

“I think it will be very interesting. I haven’t done much social science and I’m learning a lot about how people perceive the environment. A lot of people know about the bad – like smell, murky water – but something like the sea lettuce for example, they don’t know if it’s good or bad.” One of her tasks will be asking estuary users to complete a questionnaire including what they are collecting shellfish for and how often they come. There’s also a bit of citizen science involved. People who have been regular collectors over the years may have insight into how the abundance of shellfish has changed. And there’s also the small matter of the health and density of the shellfish beds themselves, and whether harvesting is really sustainable. Dr Roberts compares them to kidneys. “Wonderful filters of any waterway; they’re a very important part of an estuary eco-system. We want to maintain a healthy population, so will be doing

some sampling and looking at the health of those by doing some quadrant surveys.” Research will be based at the end of the causeway but may be extended to two other sites on the Southshore side of the estuary. There has been work done on the health of shellfish over the past 30 years, but not in the postearthquake period. “We’re intrigued that so many groups are out there harvesting,” said Dr Roberts. “Are they using it for bait? . . . we don’t know. One of the

things that’s happened around the country is these things creep up on us and all of a sudden we’ve wiped out a whole area of paua or crayfish and have lost the ability to replenish it because it’s too late. “And we have one of the biggest populations of godwits and there are many other estuary bird feeders such as pied stilts, spoonbills and herons, for example – which are very dependent on the food in the estuary. “There could be a trophic cascade (where an alteration in the food chain triggers changes in the ecosystem). Over harvesting in any environment could upset the balance.” Does she think the influx of people into the city helping with the rebuild has anything to do with it? “The answer to that is one of the reasons we want to do this research. I think full stop there’s been an increase in population in Christchurch and we have more people coming in who love fishing and catching their food. “This is a lovely, free resource and there’s all sorts of reasons people might be out there. Maybe those people haven’t been through our school system where we put such an emphasis on the environment so it’s part of our challenge to educate them.” The research findings should be published by the end of March.

Kenny Ardouin Our People Speech therapy role close to heart Kenny Ardouin was born with cleft lip and palate – the most common birth defect in New Zealand. The 26-year-old lives in Redcliffs and works as a speech language therapist. Kenny talks to reporter Sarla Donovan about his journey So what was it like growing up with cleft palate? Well, it was certainly a bit different. I feel it’s taught me a lot – I’ve learned to be more understanding of other people and the things others go through. It did present challenges, certainly as I got into the teenage years and was having to make some pretty difficult decisions around a treatment pathway at the same time as trying to have a normal teenage life. And interacting with your peers, feeling like in new situations you’re on the back foot because you look and sound different; people often have preconceived ideas and unconscious bias that you’ve got to overcome. How did your parents help you with some of those challenges – they must have been an important influence? I grew up in a loving and supportive environment. My parents had an expectation that I would be able to do whatever I wanted to do and never treated me differently, but at the same time acknowledged that things could be difficult at times. They also helped with making difficult decisions, even when I threw it back in their face. They had always investigated different treatment options for me and really fought my corner, advocated for me. But when it was time to made decisions for myself, I went against what they wanted me to do, which must have been incredibly frustrating for them. I was 16 and couldn’t see the bigger picture, whereas they could. But it took three years for me to see that.

Was this to do with options for treatment? Yes, I was having to consider serious surgery that would happen at about the age of 18. But I’d already had nine procedures and was over it. My parents could see the surgery would help me overcome some of the things I perceived as holding me back but I couldn’t see beyond the immediate effects. It wasn’t till later, when I had a better understanding of what was involved and met others who had been through it and realised what it would achieve and the impact it would have – that it would change the way that I sound and look and ultimately mean I had a better perception of myself that I made the decision to have the operation. Why did you become a speech language therapist? That was pretty much a direct result of my own experiences. As a child growing up I had a lot of difficulties with speech and

knew how frustrating it was. I knew exactly what I wanted to say but couldn’t make myself understood by other people. So I had a lot of speech therapy which had a positive impact on my quality of life. I wanted to be part of helping make that change for other people. You’ve been CEO of Cleft NZ and recently returned from presenting at a national conference in the United Kingdom. Have you always been confident speaking and presenting in public? No, it’s something that used to terrify me. It wasn’t until high school I started to try and turn that around when I stood as the student board of trustees representative and a big component of that was speaking in assemblies, which absolutely terrified me. But having that role and realising that what I was saying resonated with people made me realise there was a lot of power in people sharing their experiences – it can

make a big difference to others. I know for me it was hearing other people’s experiences that made my own decisions easier. Knowing that you’re not alone is a huge weight off your shoulders. You also work as a radio show host on Plains FM – where did your interest in media come from? Radio is something I’ve always had a natural tendency towards; it was somewhere I could just be me and not face any prejudice. I’ve evolved over the years from basic music programmes to now having a deep interest in current affairs and politics, reporting on events and meeting and interviewing people. You’ve got two younger brothers – have they been affected by cleft palate? I’m the only person in my family affected by cleft. So what causes it? We know that for some people there is a genetic component and for others it appears to be quite

a random occurrence. There’s a generally accepted feeling at the moment that it’s a combination of genetics and environment. How old were you when your family moved here from the UK? I was nine when we shifted from Rye in East Sussex, an hour south of London. We came out to New Zealand on holiday the year before. My parents fell in love with it and fancied a change of pace and lifestyle so we moved here in 2000. It was quite a big thing, moving to the other side of the world. We didn’t have any other family out here. But the primary school that I went to, Mt Pleasant, was really good at integrating us and we quickly made friends here which certainly made it a lot easier. You recently hosted a special screening of the film Wonder, based on the best selling book – why do you think the story resonates with so many people? It’s a candid look at many of the challenges people who are different may face growing up. The main character in that book, like myself, has a facial defect, which is something you can’t hide from the world like you can other health conditions. A lot of the experiences he goes through – starting school, having to deal with bullying, trying to be accepted and blend in, in a world he was born to stand out in – it described a lot of how I felt. What are your hobbies and interests? I really enjoy travelling and going to new places. I love Wales and Scotland which is where my dad and mum are from respectively – so many country towns and villages and walks, places to see – you just need to go few miles up the road and you see something new and different. And I love travelling and hiking around the South Island, we’ve got so many vast, remote places. Where do you see yourself in five year’s time? Whatever role I have in the future I hope that that advocacy and raising awareness about issues of equality and bias plays a big part.

Tram travels back to 1968

Popular Butler returns to arts factory

AFTER A stint around the country and in London, one of the Lyttelton Arts Factory’s most popular shows is back. From tonight until next Thursday, The Butler Dresses Again, a remake of the critically-acclaimed The Butler will be performed. Written by author and columnist Joe Bennett and directed by Mike Friend, The Butler was performed 113 times in 11 cities throughout the country. It then went abroad for 23 shows in London. Originally inspired by Peter Greenaway’s film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, the show takes the form of a dinner party like no other. “Fans of the original show will be surprised by The Butler Dresses Again. The show will stay true to its origins, but will have more character and less circus, and will be fitted to our new dynamic theatre space,” said Friend. Several members of the original cast return, including Christchurch’s Tom Trevella who plays the central character of the Butler. By Julia Evans BOH RUNGA has been busy with her new jewellery store in Ponsonby, Auckland. But on March 3 she’ll be getting Stellar back together and heading to Lincoln Domain for Selwyn Sounds. The day-long music festival follows last year’s inaugural event, which saw Kiwi music heavyweights the Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex

and Dragon play to a crowd of about 8000. Growing up in Hornby with sister Bic, Runga said she hadn’t spent much time in the small town but had been to several of Lincoln University’s notorious parties. “My father went to Lincoln College but I just went to parties,” she said. She’s looking forward to playing so close to home, she

said “people are always happy you’ve come to play.” But Stellar isn’t officially back together. The March festival could be a bit of a test, Runga hasn’t ruled out a full reunion. “I’m not sure if we are back together per se, we are doing some gigs and we always had fun doing that. We’ll see where us hanging out again leads,” Runga said. Alongside a reunited Stellar,
